Elaine Martin was a dynamic transgender woman who was a speaker and leader within the transgender and the broader LGBT communities for 25 years. She spoke and presented frequent seminars on an array of topics regarding the workplace, policy, transgender rights, transitioning, and the challenges faced by trans people and those who love and work with them.
Elaine was active in political campaigns and transgender policy. She lobbied to change the North Carolina DMV gender marker policy with the NC legislature and served on the steering committee against the North Carolina Amendment One Campaign.
Elaine spent 23 years in the banking industry, at the executive level, often responsible for change initiatives, acquisitions, and human resource talent integration. She was chair of the Equality North Carolina C4 board for 2½ years and was a former President and Programming Chair of “The Southern Comfort Conference”; the largest conference of transgender people in the world. She most recently served on the boards of the ACLU of North Carolina, The Raleigh LGBT Chamber of Commerce (RBPN), and the North Carolina AIDS Action Network (NCAAN) as Treasurer.
Elaine held a BA in Psychology (SUNY Buffalo), an MBA in Finance (University of New Mexico), and was a commercial pilot.
Elaine passed away on September 25, 2023 at age 71. Predeceased by her parents, Marcia and Howard Ostroff. Survived by her loving wife, Joy Ostroff; sons, Scott (Noelle) and Brian; grandchildren, Amara, Shaefer, and Owen; brother Jeff (Janet); Aunt Harriet (Bob) Seigel, nieces, nephews, and friends of many communities.
Funeral services will be held Friday, September 29, 2023 at 11 AM at Brighton Memorial Chapel – 3325 Winton Rd. S.(CLICK FOR MAP). Interment, Britton Rd. Cemetery.
Shiva will be observed Friday, September 29th, 2-5 PM with visitation hours Saturday, September 30th from 7-9 PM and Sunday, October 1st from 2-5 PM at 1755 Gloria Drive, Fairport, NY 14450 (CLICK FOR MAP).
