At the age of 91, Gloria Scalen passed peacefully on March 30, 2022. She was born in Astoria, New York on May 6, 1930 to the late Robert and Bebe Volgel. Survived by her children Alison Smith (Ian) of Irondequoit and David Scalen (Tracy) of Mendon, and grandchildren Ben, Zachary, Joshua, Becca, Rachel, and Matthew.
Gloria graduated from William Cullen Bryant High School in Queens, NY and spent her early years pursuing a career in theater by attending a theatrical college in New York City. Her aspirations for acting were cut short by an automobile accident when she was 19 years old resulting in a lengthy recovery. Gloria was employed at General Electric Corporation in NYC until she moved to Rochester, NY in the late 50’s where she would meet her future husband, John Scalen, whom she married on April 4, 1963. Gloria had two children, Alison and David. Gloria was married for 48 years until her husband John’s passing on March 12, 2012.
Gloria was an avid music fan who enjoyed and appreciated all genres of music and always had music playing in her home. Her favorite musicians were Perry Como and Chubby Checker. Gloria was known for her bright smile whom she greeted everyone with, good-natured demeanor, cheerful personality and positive attitude that left an indelible imprint on everyone she encountered.
Graveside Services will be held on FRIDAY, April 8, 2022 at 2 PM in Britton Road Cemetery, 188 Britton Rd, Rochester, NY 14616. Following the service, family members will be sitting shiva at the Scalen home, visitors are welcome to join during this time. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Lollypop Farm or the Seneca Park Zoo in her memory.
