Joseph Bochner, Ph.D.
1950 – 2023
Joe Bochner passed away peacefully at home on October 22, 2023 after a courageous 16-month battle with cancer. Joe is survived by his wife of 45 years, Nancy; their children Anne, Michael (Stephanie); granddaughters Sophia and Olivia; and family dog, Malkie. Joe, an only child, is the son of the late Abner and Frances Bochner. Surviving members include Joe’s sister-in-law/brother-in-law (Debbie and Jeff Wilson), two nieces, Dana and Shelby Wilson, father-in-law, and Joe’s cousins.
Joe received his bachelor’s degree from Queens College, a master’s degree in English from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and a Ph.D. in language and audition from UW-Madison. Joe worked for 49 years as a professor at the National Technical Institute for the Deaf at the Rochester Institute of Technology. During his tenure at NTID/RIT, Joe served as Department Chair and engaged extensively in research. He was awarded a research grant in 2017, held research patents, and published nearly 50 articles and book chapters over the course of his career.
Joe loved the NY Mets, Wisconsin Badgers football and basketball, anything New York City, and keeping up-to-date with world events. He maintained a few close friendships that spanned many decades. Joe spent a lot of time with the family dog, Malkie.
The family would like to thank Dr. Jason Zittel and nurses Brenda and Carol at the Wilmot Cancer Center. Donations in Joe’s memory may be made to the Wilmot Cancer Center or Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City.
