He was born in Hartford, CT to Dave and Ida. He and his younger brother, Richard, were raised in Newark, NJ.
After winning a competitive scholarship from Warner-Chilcott he attended Drew University. It was there that he met his future wife of 62 years, Deidre. Graduating Cum Laude, he went to graduate school at Vanderbilt University, followed by studies at Cornell. At Cornell he earned a Master’s in statistics.
Julian and Deidre have two children, Nathaniel and Abigail. They built a home in Pittsford in 1979, where they built many friendships and memories.
Julian’s work took him to many wonderful locations and companies. He worked for AVCO, DEC, Honeywell, and Kodak as a software engineer. Julian worked on the program that detected oil leaks from the Alaskan Pipeline, and he helped develop rocket computer systems. He had worked in the UK, Germany, Italy, and France. While in France his group worked to develop packets, which still shuttle information through the internet.
Julian and Deidre were members of a Havurah “Kabbalat Shabbat” for over 30 years. They are current members of Temple Emanuel. Julian has always loved Judaism, studying its history and Philosophy. He was currently reading Spinoza and Abraham Joshua Heschel.
The Epstein family has always had pets, but his favorites were his dogs. Julian loved nature, choosing to use a push mower to avoid hurting the snakes and toads. He would hug trees as he worked in the yard.
Julian also enjoyed working with his hands. He did a lot of the interior work on the family home as the contractor built the exterior. With the help of a friend’s son, he built a large back deck, which still stands decades later. Julian also built a shed, to help house the family’s sheep and chickens. He also joined the Mendon Gun Club, honing his skills at target shooting.
After retiring, he and his wife traveled extensively, pursuing their interests in nature and archaeology. During these trips he developed his skills in photography. His photos were exhibited at Image City Gallery, and several were sold.
In the words of his daughter, Dad has always been gentle, curious, and adventurous. He has left on his next big adventure.
