Lillian B Gilbert was born in August 1915 in N.Y. City and passed away on November 30, 2020 at 105 in Rochester, N.Y. Lillian is survived by her three children Barry (Julene), David (Shannon), and Beverly. She has six grandchildren Cara, Dan (Molly), Elissa (Andy), Jonathan, Mathew (Vanessa), Stephanie (Nic), and five great-grandchildren.
In 1932, with $50 in her pocket, she boarded a train to attend the University of Minnesota to fulfill her dream of becoming a nurse. She was one of the oldest living female WW II veterans and proud of her military service. As a Lieutenant in the Army, she was part of a unique medical Corp that took care of injured troops as they were transported to safety for better medical attention. Her military service covered North Africa and Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Beyond her military service, Lillian was proud of her service to the community and raising a family. She lived in New Jersey and moved to Rochester in 1999. In New Jersey, she was President of the Essex County chapter of the National Council of Jewish Women. She continued her volunteer work when she moved to Rochester, helping disadvantaged children learn to read. For many years she enjoyed participating as a standardized patient, portraying a patient to help the Medical students with their education, at the University of Rochester Medical School.
Lillian’s funeral service and burial will be private at Mt. Hope Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Honor Flight Rochester, Inc. P.O. Box 23581, Rochester, NY 14692. Honor Flight is a charity that pays tribute to our veterans by taking them to Washington, D.C., for a final tour of military monuments and our Nation’s capitol.
On behalf of our mother, the family would like to thank all those who sent prayers and best wishes.
