Maxine Newman died on May 6, 2025, just shy of her “39th” birthday. Born in Rochester on May 24, 1928, Maxine was lovingly raised as the only child of detective Al and Blanche Diamond. She was close to her large, extended family and the sisters from her Jewish sorority. After graduating from John Marshall High School, she landed a coveted job at Kodak and married Albert Newman in 1948 before having two beloved sons, Larry and Brucezl. After the family moved to West Irondequoit, Maxine and Albert further expanded their large circle of friends.  They loved to go out dancing, particularly to live music, and were always the first on the dance floor. She hosted Beth David’s popular New Year’s Eve parties, and the family spent much of the summer at the beach and the park with “the gang.” She later returned to work as the bookkeeper at East Ridge Auto Parts, which she enjoyed tremendously and where (of course) she made more new friends. For many years Maxine loved wintering in Florida, playing cards and mahjong, dancing the newest line dances, golfing, and seeing friends. She additionally volunteered at The Jewish Home in Rochester, and enjoyed spending time with her five grandchildren, including teaching them her favorite card games. In her later years, she valued the companionship of special friend, Sam Katz, and spending time with her five great-grandchildren. Maxine was very social: chatting in check-out lines, offering relationship advice to servers, and being the last to leave a party. She was a great and loyal friend. Although Maxine did not “die dancing” as she said she wanted, she did live a full, fulfilling life.

She was predeceased by her parents, Blanche and Al Diamond; her husband, Albert Newman; and her son, Bruce Newman. She is survived by her son, Larry Newman; daughter-in-law, Helene Newman; grandchildren Scott (Jessica) Newman, Brian (Carrie) Newman, Joy (Jonathan) Getnick, Eric Newman (Ben Burford), and Sam Newman (Pini Zomer); and great-grandchildren Kyle, Brady, Benjamin, Noam, and Nina.

The family wishes to thank the wonderful team at The Highlands Living Center at Pittsford, appreciating the excellent care and assistance she received during this last chapter of her life.

Services will be held on Sunday, May 11, 10am, at Temple Beth El (139 Winton Road South, Rochester 14610), followed by internment at Britton Road Cemetery.

Shiva will be held that afternoon, at Temple Beth El from 2-5pm.

In lieu of flowers, please consider donating in Maxine’s memory to Temple Beth David, the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation, or the American Cancer Society.
