Rochelle passed away on June 3, 2023, surrounded by loved ones. Rochelle was born in Lille, France on February 7, 1931. She and her family fled France in 1940, just ahead of the Nazi invasion. They received exit visas thanks to Aristides de Sousa Mendes, the Portuguese consul-general in Bordeaux (see https://sousamendesfoundation.org/family/simsovic), and made their way through Spain to Portugal, where she briefly lived and attended school. In 1941, she and her family left Portugal by boat (the Serpa Pinto) for New York City. Without a U.S. sponsor, the family was sent by train from New York to Montreal, Canada, where she spent the rest of her childhood and early adult life.

In 1958, with her husband and oldest two children, Rochelle moved from Montreal to Rochester, NY, where she had three more children. She moved her family to Brighton in 1963. She was the founder and owner of Belle Grande Shoes, a women’s shoe store that specialized in hard-to-find sizes, which she ran successfully for over 40 years, until her retirement.

She was predeceased by her husband of 64 years, Solomon Kashtan. She is survived by her children, Howard (Helen), Michael (Glynnis), Julie (John), Paula (Bill) and Robert (Dina); grandchildren, Sara, Samuel, Justin, Matthew, Evan, Brian, David, Jason, Erin, James, Cory, Maren, Megan and Ryan; and great grandchild, Elliott.

Donations in Rochelle’s name may be made to the Sousa Mendes Foundation: https://sousamendesfoundation.org/donate/.

Rochelle’s graveside service will be held on Tuesday June 6, 2023 at 10:30 AM at Britton Road Cemetery. Rabbi Michael Silbert will be officiating. Please click HERE to view the Live Stream of the funeral service.
