Dr. Sidney Samuel Weinstein died on April 8 in Dedham, Massachusetts, at age 92. Sidney was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather as well as a dedicated and caring physician.

Born in Rochester, New York in 1933, Sidney was the son of Solomon and Anne Weinstein, Jewish immigrants from Lithuania. His father, a furrier, died when Sidney was eight, and his mother subsequently married Ted Stark, owner of Bloom’s Bakery in Syracuse, NY. The blended family included siblings and step-siblings Rita Gastel, Norman Weinstein, Rose Sadowsky, and Belle Rozalsky, now all of loving memory.

Sidney completed his undergraduate and medical degrees at Syracuse University, earning his M.D. degree in 1958. For more than 40 years, he maintained a private practice in Internal Medicine in Rochester, NY. He loved practicing medicine and was a devoted and compassionate physician. He served as President of the New York State Society of Internal Medicine in the 1980s.

Sidney married Linda Shapiro in 1958, a union that would last 67 years. Together, they raised 3 children and had countless adventures, including travel to 58 countries on six continents. They built a second home in Naples, NY, where they had a large vegetable garden and where Sidney enjoyed riding his tractor mower, particularly if a young grandchild was in his lap while doing so. He enjoyed sailing on Canandaigua Lake, and would get away to remote terrain in Ontario, Canada to fish with friends. He served for a time on the board of the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra and regularly attended concerts of the RPO at the Eastman Theater.

In his early 70s, Sidney was diagnosed with dementia. He and Linda eventually moved from Rochester, NY to Newbridge on the Charles, a senior living community in Dedham, MA. The family is forever grateful to his caregivers, Robert Lubega and Brewa Namata, who gave Sidney their unwavering dedication and love.

Sidney is survived by his wife Linda, daughters Stephanie (James Cornell) and Susan (Keith Oppenheim), son Daniel (Joanna May), granddaughters Rachel, Hannah, Caroline and Ellen, grandsons Ben and Adam, and great-grandchildren Katie, Charlie, Oliver, and Milo.
