Eleanor “Ellie” Cherin (1936–2026)

A protector of our Earth through her words and actions, a loving friend to many and loving mother to her children and grandchildren passed away February 6th, 2026 while asleep peacefully in her home of 25 years.

Ellie was born in Brooklyn, NY in 1936 to immigrant parents from Russia and Latvia.  Sylvia and Murray Salmirs were proud parents of three children, Ellie being the youngest. Sy the oldest brother and Ann the middle child.  She idolized her older sister who had a strong personality and was a feminist before it’s time.  In her last days, she always made a point she wanted to be more defiant like her sister.

Ellie’s older brother passed away April 14th, 2012, her older sister, Anne, passed away the same day, February 6th two years earlier. Both Ann and Ellie succumbed to dementia slowly taking away their personality and their memories.

Ellie met her future husband at the age of 14 while at a friend’s party.  They wed the 8th of June, 1957 (10th day of Sivan, 5,717). They were married as Paul and Eleanor Cherinsky.  They changed their name before their children were born to Cherin.  They raised 3 beautiful children Bradley Scott, Susan Linley (Essrea), and David Jordan.  Ellie raised her children with wisdom, kindness and adaptability for their individual choices.  Unfortunately, her marital relationship grew incompatible over time and divorced August 1982.

Ellie is survived by her 3 children noted above and 5 grandchildren; Jason Cherin, Sam Cherin, Jordan Cherin, Pahz Cherin and Tierra Cherin all of whom attended college and/or are gainfully employed.   Most had an opportunity to spend after school time with Grandma Cherin, which was some of their fondest memories of her; playing, watching TV and eating Jello.

Ellie came out of college with a degree in dental hygiene but started her life as a stay-at-home mom.  By the 1970’s she got an itch to work and was a dental hygienist for Dr. Ruissi until the 1980’s.  She then went into dental claims for Blue Cross.  She worked a few other places and continued to work part time until her first fall and hip fracture at the age of 81.

Ellie was an animal lover and as her children moved out of the house different pets began to move in.  She adopted a few of her children’s pets (Bluff, Scarface, Peppy, Vexie, Brie, and Allison) as the children’s lives changed.  As well her own cats, John Henry, Smokey, and others.

Ellie made friends very easily, she was a warm-hearted sole who was very giving in nature.  She had friendships that lasted decades and maintained contact through the years and distance until the very end.  She joined the Rochester Area Vegan Society (RAVS), the Short Film Festival (Rochester International Film Festival), volunteer ushered at the theater and symphonic performances, joined the congregation of Beth Haskalah of Humanist Jews, and lived in an apartment complex on East Avenue and at each place made lasting friendships.

Ellie took a few overseas trips with her friends and adventured across the globe.  She’s been to Japan, Russia, England, Germany, Peru, Morocco, Cuba, Thailand, Hong Kong, China, Vietnam, Iceland, New Zealand, Greece and few more.

She clearly enjoyed her travels.  When younger she gathered with friends to play Mah jong.  Loved going out to movies and to live performances.  Multiple times she went to the Shaw festival.  She loved to cook as well.  She imparted in all three of her children a love for cooking.

Ellie will always be remembered for her kindness, her warm demeanor, openness to new experiences.  She followed her son’s vegetarianism, and became a “militant” vegan in her final days.   She never “worried” always declaring it a waste of time.  “You either do something to address what your worried about, or there is nothing you can do about it, so why worry”

She lived a rich life with many friends, and adventures.
